How to Plan a Patio or Walkway Project
What homeowners should think through before installing a patio, walkway, steps, or outdoor living space.

A good patio or walkway starts with how the space will be used. Think about furniture, foot traffic, grill placement, lighting, steps, drainage, and how people move from doors to driveways, lawns, or gardens.
What to know
Material choice matters. Natural stone, pavers, concrete, and block each have different looks, budgets, maintenance needs, and installation details. The best choice is the one that fits the home, grade, and long-term use.
Drainage should be part of the plan from the beginning. Patios and walkways need a proper base, pitch, and edge restraint so water moves away from the house and the surface stays stable.
Before work begins, confirm access for materials, where removed soil or debris will go, and whether nearby planting beds should be updated after the hardscape is complete.
