Drainage Problems That Can Hurt Your Yard and Foundation
How to spot poor drainage and when dry wells, grading, downspout extensions, or swales may help.

Poor drainage often starts small. Puddles near walkways, soggy lawn areas, mulch washing out of beds, and water pooling near the foundation are signs worth addressing early.
What to know
Downspouts should move water away from the house. If roof runoff dumps next to the foundation, it can contribute to basement moisture, erosion, and winter ice problems.
Simple fixes may include regrading low spots, extending downspouts, improving bed edges, or adding stone where water naturally travels. More involved properties may need dry wells or a designed drainage path.
The goal is not only to remove standing water. A good drainage plan protects plantings, hardscapes, lawn health, and the foundation over time.
